Tampa Bay defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-2 on April 5 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
Díaz went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, an RBI, and a run scored to lead Tampa Bay to victory. The highlight of the game came in the sixth inning with Tampa Bay leading 4-2.
With two outs and one on, Diaz lined a single up the middle off Boston reliever Corey Kluber. Díaz hit the ground and bounced hard, but Boston was in a defensive shift and had no infielders between first and second, so the ball rolled into right field. Meanwhile, first baseman Manuel Margot raced home, and right fielder Alex Verdugo made a hasty throw home, but it wasn’t quite accurate.
Catcher Connor Wong, who was well away from home plate, threw straight to second base to catch Dias trying to advance to second. However, the throw went wide and the ball rolled into the outfield, allowing Dias to run home and score. The shocking error cost the Red Sox a run they shouldn’t have had.
“Unseasonably cold weather, steady rain, and strong winds kept home runs at Fenway Park this week,” said MLB.com, the official site of Major League Baseball. But a Little League home run is clearly an exception,” MLB.com wrote, noting the play.
“It was a crazy play,” said Díaz, who became the hero of the ridiculous Little League home run. My leg still hurts. I think I need oxygen,” he laughed. He went on to say that he knew he could score when the catcher’s throw went wide.안전놀이터
“I was surprised to see the sign to run home. I knew the ball was a hit and it was slow. But I didn’t think it was going to be easy to get to third base, so when the sign came up to keep running, it was pretty exciting,” she said.
“When Yandy beat the second baseman with her dribbling footwork, Boston got the ball. We had a pretty good advantage. It’s a hard play to see. You don’t see a lot of plays like that.”
