‘Masters shock’ McIlroy recovers honor at ‘garden’ Wells Fargo Championship

World No. 3 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) sets out to restore his honor.

The Wells Fargo Championship (total prize money of 20 million dollars), a special event on the PGA Tour, will be held at Quail Harlow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA for four days from the 5th (Korean time).

McIlroy challenged for the career grand slam at the Masters Tournament, the first major tournament of the season held in April, but lost face as he missed the cut by hitting 5 over par for two days.

After that, McIlroy did not appear on the PGA Tour for about a month. This proves that the impact was huge. In particular, as in this tournament, public opinion criticized him for not participating in the RBC Heritage, a special tournament with a total prize of 20 million dollars.

In order to prevent players from leaving the PGA Tour LIV Series, the number of special tournaments with a total prize pool of more than 20 million dollars has been increased to 17 starting this season. Athletes may only withdraw once without a valid reason.

However, McIlroy, who stood at the forefront of ‘anti-LIV golf’ with ‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA), was already absent from RBC Heritage for the second time. He also did not play at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

McIlroy, who had been like that, used the Wells Fargo Championship, which he won three times in his career (2010, 2015, 2021), as the stage for his comeback. This tournament was upgraded to a special event by increasing the total prize money from 9 million dollars last year to 20 million dollars.

It means that the compatibility with Quail Harlow Club is good. In addition, it holds both course records for 18 holes (61 pars) and 72 holes (267 pars).ㅋㅋㅋ벳

Among Korean players, Kim Joo-hyung (21, Nike), Kim Si-woo (28), Lim Seong-jae (25), Ahn Byeong-hun (32), Lee Gyeong-hoon (32, CJ Logistics), and Kim Seong-hyun (25, Shinhan Financial Group) will participate. Kim Joo-hyung, Kim Si-woo, Lim Seong-jae, and Lee Gyeong-hun have participated in the Presidents Cup held on this course in September last year as representatives of the World Union team, so the course is not unfamiliar to them.

Defending champion Max Homa (USA) is on his way to winning his second consecutive title on the recent rise. After winning the first championship in his life in 2019, he lifted the championship trophy again last year and has continued a good relationship with the Wells Fargo Championship. Homa has already won two games this season.
