McIlroy, No. 1 in men’s golf world rankings “I am the best player in the world!”
Correspondent Hoon Kwon = Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), the world’s No. 1 in the PGA Tour for the first time this year, showed off his overflowing confidence.
At an official press conference on the 9th (Korean time), the day before the opening of the PGA Tour WM Phoenix Open, McIlroy answered “yes” without hesitation to the question, “Do you think you are the best player in the world right now?”
“I’m doing well now. I always feel like I’m playing smart. I’ve had the best performance in my entire golf career,” he said. “Looking at my record now, I can’t find any weaknesses. I’ve worked really hard and try to be a player who can do everything well.” .
He also added that he has been in good form for 18 months since last year’s Ryder Cup, and the latest results speak for it.
McIlroy rose to the top of the FedEx Cup by winning the Tour Championship in the final match of the playoffs in August of last year, and took the top spot in the world rankings by winning the CJ Cup in October of the same year.
This year, he opened the new year in a good mood by winning the DP World Tour Dubai Desert Classic.
For McIlroy, the WM Phoenix Open is the first PGA Tour event of the year.
World No. 2 Scotty Scheffler (USA), who lost the first place to McIlroy in October last year, expressed a slightly different opinion from McIlroy.
“I’m number two in the world right now, but I wouldn’t say I’m the second best golfer in the world,” he said.
Schaeffler said, “Right now, McIlroy and 안전놀이터 Jon Rahm are competing closely for the position of the best player in the world.”
However, Schaeffler added, “I don’t really like number 2. I want to be number 1 too.”
McIlroy, Schaeffler, and Jon Rahm (Spain), who are ranked 1st to 3rd in the world rankings, who will compete side by side at the WM Phoenix Open, will face each other for the first time this year.
In this event, both Schaeffler and Ram can surpass McIlroy and rise to the top of the world rankings.
If Schaeffler wins and McIlroy falls below a tie for third place, Schaeffler becomes first. Even if Schaeffler finishes second alone, McIlroy will regain first place if McIlroy is tied for 36th or lower and Ram does not win.
If Lam also wins and McIlroy does not tie for second place among the three, he will be first.
If Ram wins the runner-up alone, McIlroy falls below a tie for 47th place and Schaeffler’s championship must be canceled to rise to first place.
Even if McIlroy wins or runs runner-up, he keeps first place on his own.
