MLB Players Union Secretary General “Salary cap? absolutely not possible”
Tony Clark, general secretary of the Major League Players Union, said, “I have no intention of agreeing to the introduction of a salary cap.”
In a meeting with local media such as ESPN on the 26th (Korean time), Clark said, “We will never agree,” and stated that if the introduction of a salary cap is discussed, he will clearly oppose it.
Unlike other sports such as the NBA, the NFL, and the NHL, the Major League does not introduce a salary cap. This is the result of long-standing resistance from the players union.
Secretary-General Clark again expressed his disapproval of the salary cap, saying, “We do not have a salary cap and we will not agree to it.”
This came as the MLB Office gave its thoughts on the recent creation of a new committee, the so-called ‘conomic reform committee’.
Major League Baseball has been facing several economic problems lately. As some club owners, including Steve Cohen, aggressively invest, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening.
A bigger problem lies elsewhere. The existing profit model of selling broadcasting rights through local cable channels is collapsing. Diamond Sports Group, which owns Valley Sports, which broadcasts 14 of the 30 major league teams, recently announced that it is discussing the possibility of bankruptcy. After a 99-day lockout last year, major league labor and management agreed to a new labor-management agreement. There are four years left until the next labor-management agreement, but both sides are already showing signs of conflict.
