After a strong first day at the Ho Chi Minh 3 Cushion World Cup, Korea struggled in the second day of qualifying.
Korea fielded 19 players in the second round of the Ho Chi Minh 3 Cushion World Cup 2023 (PPQ) at the Nguyen Du Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Wednesday night (June 23), with only four players – Kim Dong-ryong, Oh Sung-kyu, Park Jung-woo and Yoo Yun-hyun – surviving. On the other hand, 15 players, including Jeong Ye-sung and Kim Hyung-gon, were eliminated.
The hosts, Vietnam, who swept the first round of qualifying alongside Korea the day before, continued their dominance by topping 10 of the 16 groups in the second round.
On the second day of competition, Korean players Kim Dong-ryong (Group B), Oh Sung-kyu (Group A), and Yoo Yun-hyun (Group P) topped their respective groups with two wins, while “teenage rookie” Park Jung-woo (18) finished second in Group N, but qualified for the third round as Group 1.
Kim Dong-ryong had a tough 30:26 (33 games) win over Lee Dong-han in Group B, but in his second match, he defeated Ronald van Getty (NED) 30:3 in just 10 games.
In Group A, Oh Sung-gyu (KOR) booked his ticket to the third qualifying round with a 30:29 (24 games) victory over Yoon Do-young (KOR) and then a 30:23 (26 games) win over Heng Manh Tran (VIETNAM) with 10 high runs.
Burak Hasghas eliminated from the ‘Turkiyepan Lightning’
Hosts Vietnam ‘dominate’ the second qualifying round with 10 players in first place
Yoo Yun-hyun, who finished first overall in the first qualifier, made a dramatic run to the top of Group P. Yoo defeated Alain Saez (BEL) 30:10 (29 innings) in the first round. However, in his second match against Ali Gulbey (TUR), he was down 1:19 in the first eight games. However, he focused and overcame an 18-point deficit to win 30:29 (26 games) and advance to the third round.안전놀이터
Park was tied with Le Thanh Thien (Vietnam) at 1-1 in Group N (Le Thanh Thien, Fatih Korkmaz), but lost to Avery (1.363-1.276) and seemed to be out of the tournament, finishing second in the group. However, due to a vacancy in the third qualifier, Park joined the third qualifier as the top seed in the second group.
Meanwhile, Korea’s 3-cushion favorite Jeong Ye-sung lost two games in Group O and Korea’s fourth-ranked player Kim Hyung-gon was eliminated with a 1-1 record in Group K. Last year’s World Junior 3 Cushion champion, Burak Hashas (Turkiye), finished third in Group G with a 1-1 record.
The third qualifying round (PQ) will begin at 1:00 p.m. KST on April 24. Korea will have nine players in the field, including Kim Dong-ryong Oh Sung-kyu Park Jung-woo Yoo Yun-hyun, the top seeded Ahn Ji-hoon Kim Dong-hoon and powerhouse Jung Seung-il Son Jun-hyuk, who all made it through the second round.
